River Walk

1 Hour

Leave the King’s Head, turn right and follow Church Street uphill. At the top of the hill turn right into Mill Lane to river.

 

Cross footbridge over the millstream and head south-west across the meadow to the high footbridge over the main River Nene.

 

Take the short path to the field, then cross the field diagonally towards Achurc church.

 

Proceed through the kissing gate and follow the path through the churchyard, exiting via an elaborate memorial lynch gate.

 

Follow this lane for approximately 100 yards and then turn left onto a path through the woods.

 

Follow this for approximately a quarter of a mile, then bear left down the hill towards the river, following the woodland track to the Lilford-Pilton road.

 

Turn left onto the road, cross the two river bridges, then climb the stile on the right and cross the meadow and an arable field diagonally to the Pilton-Wadenhoe road.

 

Turn left and follow the lane to Wadenhoe village, passing Wadenhoe House on the left.

 

In the village centre, turn left after the village noticeboard and then right down the hill back to the pub.

 

 

  

River Walk

 

Leave the King’s Head, turn right and followChurch Street uphill. At the top of the hill turn right into Mill Lane to river.

 

Cross footbridge over the millstream and head south-west across the meadow to the high footbridge over the main River Nene.

 

Take the short path to field, then keep to right-hand side of field, continuing along anarrow path between two hedges that eventually opens out into a farm. Follow the path across the field to the Achurch-Thorpe road.

 

Turn right to Thorpe Waterville, bear right, cross two bridges and continue across flood plain to a third bridge.

 

Cross the stile on the right immediately after the bridge and follow Brancey Brook downstream to the confluence of the River Nene.

 

Turn right (downstream) and follow the riverbank for approximately half a mile to a sharp right-hand bend in the river.Bear left along the hedge, climb the stile and turn right onto the path that runs north, parallel to the river.

 

You are now on the Nene Way long-distance footpath. Follow this for approximately one mile back to the pub.

 

 

 

Woods Walk

 

2 Hour

 

Leave the King’s Head, turn left and follow the path up the hill to the church. Continue through churchyard and church car park, then bear left across field and through gate, following path down hill to a firm gravel footpath.

 

Follow this for approximately half a mile, turning right at the next gate and crossing meadow to a stile onto the Wadenhoe-Aldwincle road.

 

Cross this road and follow the footpath along the edge of the field for a quarter of a mile until you meet a metalled lane.

 

Turn left here onto a byway and continue for half a mile to a footpath on the right that crosses two meadows to Greenside Wood. Follow this track along the edge of the wood for about a mile, then bear left to a metalledtrack in the wood. Bear right here and then right again by the pond.

 

Follow this trackthrough Lady Wood and Lilford Wood.When you reach the gate facing Lyveden New Bield, turn right and follow the Lyveden Way footpath past Wadenhoe Lodge until you reach a narrow lane to Aldwincle Lodge.

Bear left here for a short distance to theWadenhoe-Aldwincle road. Bear left then rightdown lane back to Wadenhoe village and the pub.

 

 

River & Woods Walk

 

4Hour

 

This route combines the river and woods walks.Leave the King’s Head, turn right and follow the directions for the 2-hour River Walk through Achurch, Thorpe Waterville and along Harper’s Brook and the riverside meadows to the Nene Way footpath.

 

Follow this back towards Wadenhoe for approximately one mile, crossing a footbridge over a stream and across a meadow before entering a gravel path through the woods.

 

After about half a mile, go through a gate and then turn off the track at another gate on the left, crossing the meadow to a stile at the Wadenhoe-Aldwincle road. Cross this road and follow the footpath along the edge of the field for a quarter of a mile until you meet a metalled lane. Turn left here onto a byway and continue for half a mile to the footpath on the right that crosses two meadows to Greenside Wood.

 

Follow this track along the edge of the wood for about a mile, then bear left to a metalled track in the wood. Bear right here and then right again by the pond. Follow this track through Lady Wood and Lilford Wood.

 

When you reach the gate facing Lyveden New Bield, turn right and follow the Lyveden Way footpath past Wadenhoe Lodge until you reach a narrow lane to Aldwincle Lodge. Bear left here to the Wadenhoe-Aldwincle road. Bear left then right down lane back to Wadenhoe and the pub.
